How to Buy & Sell Safely
MOCCA is a platform for buyers and sellers to connect with each other. We do not vet the ads before they are published. We make it clear in our Terms and Conditions that we are not responsible for the content of ads placed on MOCCA.
We do, however, monitor the site and remove ads that clearly contravene our Posting Rules. We encourage MOCCA users to alert us to such ads.
We also encourage MOCCA users to exercise common sense when they buy or sell via the Internet. There are many advantages to online-related buying and selling but, as in all commercial activity, there is always the danger of unsubstantiated claims and other unethical practices, and of outright fraud.
While the principle of caveat emptor (let the buyer beware) puts the onus of caution on the buyer, sellers too need to be alert to possible scams.
Here are some tips for safer buying and selling via the Internet:
Advertise & search online; sell & purchase in person
It is wise to arrange to meet so that the buyer can examine the item and be sure it meets his or her needs. Payment can then be made immediately. For the seller, it's usually best to get payment in cash as cheques can bounce.Pay on Delivery / Deliver on Payment
If you're the buyer, do not agree to send money in any form (cash, electronic transfer and so on) before you receive an item, particularly if the seller is an individual or a little-known company.
And if you're the seller, do not mail (or deliver by other means) the item without being sure that you will be paid. Meeting the other party and completing the transaction in person is strongly recommended.
Take extra care with sellers or buyers who are overseas
As a general rule, don't agree to transactions with advertisers who are overseas unless they are established companies or have secure credit card or other online payment facilities such as Paypal. It's too risky otherwise.
You'll find some useful information and advice about safe online shopping and payments on this site: Get Safe Online: http://www.getsafeonline.org/
Too-good-to-be-true offers are usually precisely that
You can find some very good deals on MOCCA. But be careful about ads that offer products at extremely low prices or quick and easy ways to make lots of money. The deep discounts usually come with some conditions, so be sure to look out for these. Meanwhile, if you are hoping to get rich quick and without much effort, you're probably better off trying your luck at the Singapore Sweep.
Medical miracles
We get many offers in our email - and also on MOCCA - of products that promise near miraculous results for sexual performance, breast size, weight problems, and so on. Most are probably harmless enough, but it would be wise to do a bit of research before you start using these products. Ask around amongst your friends and do a search on the Internet to see what people have said about the product. Most importantly, especially if you have any medical condition, check with your doctor. -
Problem Postings (Report As Offensive)
We do not vet ads before they are placed on MOCCA partly because, with the high volume of ads we get, it would dramatically slow down the publishing process. We also believe that the vast majority of our users are mature and responsible people who will readily abide by our posting rules.
There are, however, some who will abuse this trust and try to take advantage of our service, especially as it is currently free of charge. We thus do monitor the ads and remove those that contravene our posting rules.
We encourage members of the MOCCA community to help us by keeping an eye out for problem ads.
So if you come across an ad that appears to be in the wrong category, or is in any way objectionable (see our Posting Rules), please alert us by clicking on the 'Report as Offensive' button that is on every Ad Details page. You need to be registered and logged in to do this.
You can also send email to webmaster@mocca.com but please include as much detail as possible, including the URL of the ad.
We will check things out and take action as needed.
